Biography(ies)

Born in Chicoutimi (Canada), Philippe-Aubert Gauthier lives and works in Montreal (Canada). He is a sound and digital artist, musician, junior mechanical engineer, M.Sc. The core of his artistic approach is based on the interactions of arts, cultures, sciences and technologies in an integrated research program. Each of these fields of action and related knowledge are used to develop artistic and musical pieces that address the social constructions of technologies and the cultures that result from them. Most of his artistic works are influenced by readings from music, cultural studies, communications and media history. P.-A. Gauthier has produced over 40 works and published over 60 scientific papers. He has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Tanya St-Pierre is a visual, sound and digital artist who creates works in various forms: performance, drawing, painting, collage, digital photography and photomontage, sculpture, installation, video art and sound art. These multiple forms are part of a more general scheme that thwarts and questions certain notions of representation and cultural artifacts. Originally from Gatineau (Canada), she currently lives and works in Sherbrooke (Canada). She obtained a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (Québec) in 1998. Recipient of grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the SODEC and the City of Sherbrooke, her work has been presented in various exhibitions and events in Canada, Mexico, Morocco, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Some projects have been realized during artist residencies in the United States, Quebec, Canada and Mexico. Member of the performance duo NOÏZEFER CWU, she has participated in various events of action art (performance), experimental electronic music and digital arts.

INTERTYPES is an installation that looks at the cultural imprint of 3D printing in the evolution of printing techniques, investigating the historical and cultural continuity of these technologies. The work approaches the question of technological developments from a “remediation” perspective, that is to say, by the way past technologies influence those currently emerging, from the angle of media archaeology. How, for example, do past cultural/historical artifacts or accidents get “encoded” and carried over to our current technological cultures? There is also a reflection on the printed and moving image in history, as well as on the idea of veracity and more specifically of truth markers. 3D prints and simulacra of historical artifacts also occupy the ambiguous space of these questions. Consisting of 3D and 2D prints, and computer generated videos as a narrative counterpoint, the installation borrows the traits of a science fiction that subtly unfolds before our eyes.

The way in which ancient technologies are linked to those we use today informs us of the constancy of a cultural filiation through time. The principle of connection is perhaps the key to this relationship of the past to the present – just as it is also the key to understanding the hyper present that is ours.
